Jersey Swells

Friday night I noticed the right side of Jersey's tiny little head was swollen.  At first Aaron did not agree with me but then upon closer inspection he did see it.  We decided to wait until morning to see if the swelling would go down on it's own.

Saturday morning we woke up and the swelling was worse.  So after a few texts back and forth with my Mom she agreed to meet me at the vet's office because I was pretty sure I wasn't going to be able to afford paying for this.  I called the vet's office who told me it sounded like something was wrong with his tooth although he is really young to have that happen.  I thought they were crazy because I was pretty sure he had been stung by something.

We decided to go to Petsmart and have the vet there check it out.  Jersey weighed in at a whopping 8.3 pounds!  Then the vet's assistant came in and Jersey wouldn't let her touch his mouth.  So she too thought it was something with his tooth.  She took his temperature and then we waited for the vet.

The Vet, Dr. Farmer (appropriate name for a Vet in my opinion), came in and instantly fell in love with Jersey (just like everyone does).  She said it looked more like a sting (HA).  So then she felt Jersey up (had to make sure he was neutered) and prepared me for the worst.  She wanted to keep him through the day.  He was going to be sedated so they could check around in his mouth.  Then when he came out of sedation I could come get him.  This was all at 10:30 am.  So I asked about what time he would be ready to go home.  They responded with 4:00 pm.  My instant thought was, "ok good that's before 5:00 pm (we had a wedding to attend)"  then my next thought was "Oh God how is this going to work we have a wedding at 5."

Dr. Farmer brought in the estimate.  I just about died at this point.  Without the Wellness Plan through Banfield/Petsmart she was estimating it would cost almost $1000.  With the Wellness Plan it was going to be around $450.  These estimates included x-rays of his head if they got in there and found out that it was his tooth.  Mom told them to go ahead and she would pay for it.  We walked out hoping that he did not need x-rays.  Then we went home.

Once I got back to Aaron's he decided he needed to go to the bank.  So we ran to town.   Then got back and ate sandwiches with his mom.  Then we fiddled around on the XBox.  Then we decided to go to JCPenney because Aaron needed a new shirt for the wedding at the very least (he ended up getting a shirt, pants, and belt).  While on the way there Mom called and asked if I had heard anything yet.  We decided for the sake of logistics I would run into Petsmart to see how much longer.

I run in, they go get Dr. Farmer who comes out with her iPhone to show me pictures of Jersey's mouth.  He did get stung.  She also thought he had an infection and he will probably need to be on an antihistamine and an antibiotic.  I tell her that I need to pick him up by 4 at the latest because we have a wedding at 5.  She says no problem and they would get him to start coming out of sedation.  I leave and call Mom to fill her in.  Then we go get Aaron a haircut and Jersey some wet food to take his pills with and we fly home.

I hurry get in the shower.  And as I'm starting to get ready Mom calls me.  She instantly says "I own that puppy for awhile."  So I asked if she had paid for him.  She said she did and they would give me an itemized receipt all with his medication when I went to pick him up.  I thank her profusely.  I finish getting ready and debate about whether or not I should wear my black dress to pick him up or if I should just wear normal clothes and change when I got back to Aaron's.  Aaron tells me to go dressed for the wedding just in case there isn't much time.  So I do which entailed a black cocktail dress with snakeskin heels--I was way overdressed for Petsmart.  I get to the animal hospital part and the Vet does a double take because I look completely different.  Then I proceed to wait about 15 minutes for them to be done with my little guy.  The Vet also tells me that when Jersey came out of sedation he tried to bite one of the Vet techs.  So Jersey now has to have a note on his file that he's a biter!

I finally get Jersey who is a shedding fool.  He also has a little bandage on his leg from where his IV had been put in.  But he was perfect again (with some swelling still).  I get him and his medicine and we hightail it out of there.

We get home and he is still a little loopy from the sedation.  And he could barely jump on the couch to sit next to Aaron's Mom.  Aaron and I go to the wedding.  When we got home Jersey still had his bandage on.  I said he looked like a kid who had gone to the hospital for something and came home with band-aids on and decided he was going to leave them on because he was a tough guy.  We gave Jersey his first round of pills and went to bed.

Jersey has a couple more days of pills twice a day.  But his swelling is gone.  And he seems back to his normal self.  Except a couple hours after he takes his pills...then he knocks out (poor dude can't handle antihistamines)!  Here is a picture of Jersey passed out the other night.  He was watching Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives.

I failed as a blogger to get a picture of his swollen face or his bandage!  I was too concerned about the health of the little dickens!  But I can assure everyone he is as good as new.  He gets to go see Dr. Farmer Monday night for a follow-up appointment.
